In the beginning of the nine weeks in ENC 1101, the class was instructed to write down their personal objective concerning what they wanted to get out of the class. With this portion of the class nearly at an end, I have yet to attain my one objective, "to learn how to incorporate my personal style into technical papers so they become interesting." But I feel that I have learned something else that makes up for the lack of completion. Charla taught us how to create our own topic for a paper, as is required by many classes in college. I am confident now that even if the subject of a paper has a technical aspect, I will be able to give it my own touch when refining it down to an actual prompt, in turn, changing the paper from "technical" to whatever I want it to be. So I do believe that in an indirect way I was able to accomplish my goal for ENC 1101.
As far as the most important thing I have got out of the class thus far, it would have to be that I now know there can be freedom in English class. Let me explain further. Up until now, all of the English classes that I have taken were about setting rules and presenting boundaries one could never cross. Writing was usually presented as a subjective object, when in fact this is impossible. Each person feels differently and thinks differently than everyone else, so how could everyones writing be subjective? Charla never posed any limitations for us and, for me at least, she brought to light how independent one can be in English. She presented us with the idea of rhetoric, and, as previously stated, she taught us how to create our own writing prompts. In the past, I have always wrote papers "for the teacher", meaning I presented what I knew they wanted to hear. But now I am beginning to write for myself again, which is a very liberating concept in itself.
I feel that I deserve an A in ENC 1101 because I have completed all of the required materials for the class. From writing two formal papers, a personal essays, taking notes, etc., I have obtained close to 7000 words in the nine week period which surpasses the Gordon Rule requirement. I have been able to grasp all of the proposed concepts effectively and understandably which is apparent in the things I have written. I have created my own working online portfolio, which includes my main papers, so I will have writing samples for the future. I am vocal in many of the class discussions and I am able to build upon statements, even if I dont outright say them. I have actively participated in the discussion forum and the list serve, presenting new ideas to talk about. So once again, for all of my hard work these past nine weeks, I should receive an A in ENC 1101.
